[ Yeah, Kavinsky would think that. But then, Sam's pretty sure the kid would come up with a price for anything - friendship, maybe, or even just talking to Sam. ]

( Nobility, part of the diplomatic envoy. The kind that gets a little too close to their guards. )

[ He doesn't figure he has to tell Kavinsky that anyone without a secret or some kind of scandal automatically looks more suspicious than someone who can be slotted easily into a category. Or that people are more likely to give away more when they think they hold power over you. ]

[Kavinsky isn't close enough for Sam to hear him laugh. He transmits mirth over the mental link in its place. For Kavinsky, it's sincere, but the edge of his amusement is always serrated.]

( Yeah, okay. Got it. Lucky for you, I don't charge by the hour for my buds. Glad you found a way to get how hard you are for me out of your system. )

[Another surge of Kavinsky's newly formed good mood twangs the bond between them and leaves it vibrating.]

[ Feeling it is almost as good, though, especially because Sam can feel that sincerity. Their bond hums, and Sam returns it with the phantom sensation of fingers through Kavinsky's hair. ]

( Yeah, I bet you are. You gonna be able to keep up with me? )

[The finer hairs on the back of his neck stand up, and peer pressure does work, because his arm hairs follow suit.]

( Do we have time for dumb questions? )

( Depends on the dumb question. )

[ Go ahead, he means, amusement curling out across their connection. ]

[He had meant Sam's dumb question. There's no doubt that Kavinsky can keep up with him. All he needs is a few cues to follow.

Hadn't he proved that in the rescue mission? He's not some dumbass middleschooler that needs his hand held. But if the floor is open...]

( How great was them getting rid of Don't Ask, Don't Tell for you? )

[ Sam never asks dumb questions, clearly. But there's a curiosity in wanting to see what Kavinsky throws at him this time, and there's a huff somewhere between amusement and exasperation.

He could be honest. Could say that it hadn't changed much, that he'd still flirted the same and made sure the way he flirted with other men was phrased in a way that could - marginally - be just teasing banter if he had to fall back on that. Could say that by the time he'd started to see a difference, started to see more people being out at the VA and think about how best to support them, he was off chasing down a ghost.

And there is a hint of that across their link, just the first part that it hadn't changed much - their connection's been stronger, since he helped Kavinsky with shielding - but mostly there's just the impression of a slow, pleased grin. ]

( Better for everyone I was with after that. )

[That strengthening of their bond was never Kavinsky's intention. Sam's proven himself a liability; some sun god that wants to coat everyone in rays so bright shadows scream in troves during their genocide. He's never met someone like him before, but he thinks if they were all the same age Sam would hang out with Triple Dick Gansey and it makes his stomach flip over.]

( Fucking queer, man. )

[ Or maybe he'd hang out with Kavinsky for the same reasons he's hanging out with him now - hell, Sam at seventeen or eighteen was different than he is now: angry and impulsive and cocky.

But they're not the same age, and Sam doesn't want to burn out anyone's shadows. He's still got his own, after all, it'd be pretty damn hypocritical. He just wants to maybe give them days with a little bit more sun, make things just that much brighter.

Regardless, he's not going anywhere. There's the impression of a soft laugh when Kavinsky calls him queer, because - come on, kid, this couldn't be more obvious. ]

( Nice of you to spell it out like that for us. )
