[Kavinsky likes nervous as a short-term method of tolerating him. Nervous means they're going in knowing they won't come out unscathed. Nervous shows foresight, it shows energy-- moxie. But it gives him the impression he needs to be worthy of such attentions. His presence mutates a few shades less approachable.]

( Shoot. )

[It's a bit of a feedback loop— he closes off a little, and so does she, her thoughts more restrained, more carefully chosen.]

( I wanted to ask you about what happened to Sirius. About what you'd want if it happened to you.

You don't have to answer if you don't want. )

[Silence. And not because she told him not answering was an option. Kavinsky is merely soaking in the question. The painful reminder of Sirius' departure and the reality of what's being said.]

( Aren't you a little too blond to be this morbid, honey? I'm not into goth girls. Sorry. )

[travailed]

( Don't call me that. )

[Gentle and understanding she might be, but a doormat she is not.]

( If you don't want to answer, you can just say so. It's not an easy question. I'd understand. )

( What? Goth? )

[And before she can correct him--]

( It's an easy question to answer. It's just a waste of time. I'm not gonna die here. )

[She's not going to. He knows what she meant.]

( Do you think Sirius made a mistake? )

( He's an ex-con. I bet he's full of them. )

[Note the present tense.]

( I mean now. Do you think he's asleep because he made a mistake? )

[Kavinsky is running out of ways to be purposefully obtuse.]

( Like what? Pricked his finger? )

[Or maybe it's just become boring.]

( If you're asking whether he pissed off the hive, why are you doing it through your head? )

( I'm asking why you think it can't happen to you. )

[It's not her first rodeo with dumb boys like this. Beth's mind is still and unyielding.]

( Like I said. If you don't want to answer, just say so. )

( Cool. I don't want to answer. )

[But he does, piecemeal, his explanation a vibration that echoes out from him across their connection.

When he's asleep, Kavinsky has control. When he's asleep, he's a young god. Sirius had his wizard's wand and his fierce pride, but like many others, sleep and its evolution into death were uncontrollable. Even scary.

K doesn't have that problem. His fellow hivemates have told him that the 'sleep' here is different, that there are no dreams. He won't believe it until he's the one tugged into the deep black himself.]

[She puts those pieces together as they come. Not all of it makes sense to her, in sort of the same way not all of what Sirius could do made sense to her, but she accepts it as her answer nonetheless. If he falls asleep, let him sleep. Even if his logic seems risky to her, she hadn't gotten the impression he'd be open to discussion.

She leaves it at that; she's not cruel enough to harass him with a topic he's clearly not comfortable with. She'll just keep her answer, and hope she doesn't ever have to act on it.]
