BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Joseph Kavinsky

Canon: The Raven Cycle series

Bio: At his ritzy boys' school, Aliongby Academy, Joseph Kavinsky is one more rich af party boy, just a little bit better at it than most. See, he's known for throwing the ragers, the 'substance' parties, the real 'oo, that's gonna hurt tomorrow' affairs. And yeah, there's rumors going around concerning how he ended up in Henrietta, Virginia-- most of which have to do with his mobster father. But Kavinsky has done this great job of presenting the front of a crazy good time, and almost everyone prefers that version of the story. In truth, Kavinsky is a dream thief: he enters slumberland, builds what he needs, and is able to take it back out with him. His dreams can become tangible reality, and instead of trying to save the world or anything foolish like that, he'd rather cook himself up some dream-roofies and firework dragons. A bit more than unstable, calm enough under pressure to shoot monsters in the face, Kavinsky's fun until he's terrifying. He recently became obsessed with a Greywaren (dream guardian as opposed to thief) and tried to take over his life, but that didn't work out so well.

SYMBIOTE INFORMATION

[IOTA] - [Pyrotechnic Energy Fireworks]
This ability begins as sparks in his fingertips and along his palms. Kavinsky is not able to throw the sparks and he can't generate more power than a mid-voltage stun-gun (so he could cause damage to a normal human-type, but those with supernatural resistance wouldn't be that wounded). The display is colorful, however, and up-close rather bright-- if he did press his hand at full blast onto someone's face, it wouldn't be pleasant. That said, they are pyrotechnics, not lightning, so rain or being surrounded by water in general could dampen (sorry, I had to) the effects. The color of the sparks is completely arbitrary. This power works off of a mixture of personal energy and physical endurance-- using it non-stop for too long can cause fatigue or even 'burning' of Kavinsky's hands as his resistance to the pyrotechnics deteriorates. If he's willing to give himself second degree burns, he could probably pull through for a longer amount of time-- 10 straight minutes without a break (cooldown is at least a couple hours plus healing of burns)-- but he would need assistance/healing fairly badly after that. At this rank, as with all ranks, through turning the power on and off, Kavinsky can stretch out the length of time the pyrotechnics are available for him before they flicker out to cooldown mode.

Kavinsky's dangerous. It's an easy read and he isn't necessarily trying to hide it-- he's damaged and unstable (almost especially when he's smiling). He recently suffered a bit of heartbreak; he liked a boy who didn't see eye-to-eye on the whole 'ditch everyone else in your life for me' thing Kavinsky was set on. He's obsessed with dreams and sleeping-- it won't be hard to pick up on something relating to him entering dreams lucid from the start. He's seventeen. He's rich. He has nothing but scorn for his parents (mom's a bitch, dad's dead an asshole).

He likes drugs. Alcohol. Drugs he makes. Alcohol he gets people to bring to him. Cars-- he loves cars. Car racing and car crashes. Kavinsky's usually thinking and feeling in ways that seem a lot like a series of car races, car crashes. Pinning him down is difficult, but he's surprisingly chill for all the disruption going on. It's not a farce, either. Some men just want to see the world burn.

Kavinsky is rich, seventeen, and from Henrietta, Virginia, United States, Earth. He reads like a Hollywood shark-- see, the real ones are nice and don't mean to be scary, they're just hungry. But Hollywood sharks are doing it because they're vicious and got these teeth just built for digging in. Kavinsky's like that. He's also an addict; drugs, alcohol, etc. When those are brought up, it shouldn't be hard to read the attraction in him.

He's also prone to latching onto someone like him, whatever that may mean. Considering the medley of losers in this hivemind, there has to be someone.

MENTAL LINK
His mental link is fireworks and cocaine and dreams-- always dreams. Just the act of dreaming. The usefulness of sleep and getting what you want. It's there. The awesome power of a molotov cocktail. The ensuing flame. Skinny dipping then popping pills. The smell of gasoline and then the smell of high quality cologne. The face of a man or a boy, replaced by the same face of the man or the boy. But not exactly. Kavinsky's mental link doesn't feel comfortable for anyone.

OPT OUT INFO: Kavinsky is a very, very, very bad boy. A famous quote from him is "consent is overrated" and he's murdered multiple people (allegedly). Since he goes full yandere when he likes a boy (maybe also girls??), I want to be clear here that a lot of close CR with Kavinsky would butt up against triggering material. He is incredibly bad mannered and doesn't understand 'stop that' in almost any context. Please let me know if you would like to avoid play with him regarding any particular subject or avoid play with him altogether.

• Dream Crafting/Thievery - While Ronan initially mistakes Kavinsky as a Greywaren, a guardian of dreams such as himself, Kavinsky is his book's namesake: a dream thief. When asleep, Kavinsky has the ability to craft items of his choosing and remove them from the dreamscape while draining his energy source an equivalent amount. For example, in Dream Thieves, the energy focal point Kavinsky makes use of is a magical forest called Cabeswater. The forest itself is part reality, part dream. While dreaming, Kavinsky can sneak into the forest, create anything including a white Mitsubishi Evo and a fire-breathing dragon, then bring it back with him when he wakes. However, this process takes energy from Cabeswater (in the book, it's reflected by power-- both electrical and mystical-- fluctuating along the leyline). The energy amount taken depends upon the source and also what he's taking from the dream. The drugs he creates to spread at his parties? Not so much. A hundred Mitsubishis? Yeah, a lot. And the power is remarkably flexible, since he's able to form new life with it, using it twice to replace his father and his friend that he implies having killed.

Considering the insane power under Kavinsky's control, and the nature of the game, the way his power will work is gonna have to shift. Since there is no leyline or Cabeswater for Kavinsky to steal from, in order to take from the dreams, he would have to supplant his power with energy taken from those around him. For now, the mods have asked that 6 months go by before he can take energy from other hive friends (assuming he bonds with his symbiote), so he'll mostly be focusing on utilizing his own power or any available in the area depending on where they're at.

• Car Racing - Kavinsky fucks up at hard turns, but he's pretty good at driving! Just don't ask how many cars he's destroyed for fun.

• Gun Wielding - He owns (likely dreamt) and knows how to use a handgun. I'll assume his knowledge of weaponry falls short beyond that.
